Dr. Holder’s Comments

Answer: Combination Peels and Medical Therapy

This condition is called Tinea Versicolor. T.V. is often seen in people who have oily skin, or over secretion of the pilo-sebacceous unit associated with over production of yeast, or excessive sweating, for example, in teenagers, young adults, athletes, and pregnant women. There is a genetic predisposition and it is not contagious. It is often seen on the chest, back, arms, and shoulders. It is often ignored by clinicians since it is considered more cosmetic but it is quite bothersome to many, especially to teenagers, affecting one’s confidence. In my 21 years of practice in dermatology, this is a common medical condition that I have encountered where cosmetic therapy works.
